    Guitar Pickup Research

Initial thoughts about guitar pickups Since their conception, there was not much progress in the development of guitar pickups. Of course, efforts have been made, and we now have various methods of construction, for instance, the Fishman Fluence use a PCB “winding core” or the Lace Alumatone which uses an entirely different paradigm. There are, however, a few questions left unanswered. What does actually matter for the players, the people who use them on a daily basis?

    Open-source Guitar Pickup Winder [WIP]

Description This project aims to develop an open-source guitar pickup winder which could be build relatively easily, using a set of 3D printed mounting hardware. The physical structure is built out of 2020 aluminium extrusion which is readily available online since it’s extensively used for DIY 3D printers. One may be able to source all the pieces from offcuts and scarps. Design requirements A set on initial requirements for the pickup winder are as follows:

Building a U-bass from leftover wood

In my previous post, I showed how I managed to build an entire guitar from scratch, using very few resources, and only using materials sourced from local hardware stores. Sometimes you miscalculate how much wood you need for such a build, or you just buy an extra piece just in case anything goes wrong. Things usually do go wrong, but during the previous build it was all smooth sailing (yay!). And I’m now left with an extra piece of beech, which I can’t store indefinitely in my student accommodation room.

Diy Timer Boards for Archery [WIP]

This post will follow the development and build of a set of boards used in Archery for keeping time of an end, displaying the current detail shooting and signalling when it is safe to shoot and when it’s safe to collect your arrows. As many other projects, this one is built around some Arduinos, some LED strips and some radio communication modules. Requirements: Count down the time from a set number of seconds down to 0.

    Building a guitar from scratch

From time to time we all need a project which takes us out of our comfort zone. It’s important that we constantly test the limits of what we can do and try to push them when given the opportunity. Nothing however prepared me for what I was about to. You see, I like to build stuff, I enjoy doing some woodworking where possible, even though I can’t physically do it properly, as I still live in a student accommodation with very limited space.

Academic workflow for the 21st century

Going back to just about 20 years ago, a researcher’s job was so much more complicated than it is nowadays. Of course, if we just think about the pure research being carried out, not much has changed, the limits of knowledge are still being pushed, little by little every day. However, the tools accessible nowadays might make any researcher of past days feel just the tiniest bit of envy; and I will start with perhaps the most important development: The ability to access any publication in no time through this thing called the internet.
